The Ruffed Grouse
Sometimes called "Drummer Grouse." Ruffed Grouse are native to almost all of Canada and in 39 states in the US (mostly the northeast). The grouse population is very cyclical. Theses cycles occur about every ten years. The cycles are said to be caused by forest fires and sun spots, meaning even the experts have not a clue.

This was the first upland bird I have ever harvested. Grouse are very fast and hard to harvest. But they also are excellent eating. Departing on where you hunt, some have a subtle berry taste to the meat.
