They are sometimes called the "Drummer Grouse" because of the way the male will rapidly beat his wings. This rapid loud noise is to stake his breeding territory. This drumming keeps males away from an area and also attracts females. Breeding takes place from March to May.
The Hen stays with the eggs for around three weeks and stays with the chicks until fall.
