The Ringnecked Pheasant
Ringneck populations peaked in the 1940's in most parts of the country. In the 70's and 80's intensive farming practices took a heavy toll, eliminating as much as 90% of pheasant cover. Thats to conservation groups like Pheasants Forever and such efforts as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) the pheasant population is slowly making a turn around.

Ringnecks can be found just about everywhere except for most of the southeast region of the US.

They are personal my favorite upland bird to harvest. They will bring a huge challenge in the later season, as well as the early part. A ringneck can and will confuse a unexperienced dog. When a ringneck flies they will take off what seems to be at a 90 degree angle. When they level off forget it! They are gone!

They also are the best tasting of the game birds to harvest in my opinion.
